Creatine monohydrate vs HCL — which is best?

Creatine HCL dissolves more easily and is taken in a smaller dose, which is genuinely convenient. But monohydrate is far better researched, much cheaper, and no study has shown HCL producing better results. For almost everyone, monohydrate is the smarter buy.

What the two actually are

Both are creatine — the difference is what it is bound to. Monohydrate is creatine with a water molecule; it is the form used in the overwhelming majority of research. HCL (hydrochloride) is creatine bound to hydrochloric acid, which makes it more soluble in water.

Where HCL genuinely wins: solubility

HCL dissolves more completely and is usually taken in a smaller dose, so it mixes clear and can be gentler on sensitive stomachs. If plain monohydrate leaves grit in the bottom of your glass or unsettles you, HCL is a reasonable switch. That convenience is real.

Where monohydrate wins: evidence, and price

Better solubility is not the same as better results — and results is the part nobody has shown for HCL. There is no good evidence that HCL builds more strength or muscle than monohydrate. Meanwhile monohydrate has hundreds of trials behind it and typically costs a fraction as much per serve. You are paying more for HCL to solve a mixing problem, not a performance one.

The verdict

Start with monohydrate. It is the most-studied, best-value option and it works. Micronised monohydrate already mixes better than the old cheap stuff. Only pay up for HCL if solubility or stomach comfort is a genuine issue for you — not because it is marketed as "advanced."
